Finding your place to shine!

How do we shine?

I believe that we as human beings have an innate drive to grow and develop, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. There are many things that can inspire us to grow and develop. Music for many people can be one of those things. It can grip them in particularly significant moments in their lives. And in these moments they can find songs that can inspire, motivate and uplift them. When I find songs that resonate with me, I always look to reflect on what it is about that particular song that draws me in. One song that has always struck me, and which can at times get me to the point of tears, is David Gray's “Shine”.

Many times I have gotten into my car for long journeys, and put my playlist on; when this song starts playing, I’m gripped by the powerful, inspiring and uplifting words of this song. For me, it’s so much about life and choosing to be “all in” on a daily basis. Everyone will have their own significant parts of songs, and lyrics that strike them on many different levels. For me, there are 3 significant parts of “Shine” that stand out.

Firstly, the lyrics “step out of the shadows”: this for me is about being willing to stretch and reach for who we are meant to be. Stepping out of the shadows is about getting out of our comfort zones, being brave and taking that leap, to step into all of our potentials. So here is a question for you, what do you feel you are standing in the shadows about? And what do you think you could do to get yourself one step closer to stepping out of the shadows if that is where you are right now?

Secondly the lyrics “go where you can shine”: For me, this is about finding the courage to truly be who you are meant to be. It’s finding your own individual way to shine. And letting who you genuinely are emanate from within. This is about finding your own very individual and personal way of shining. This is not about being the most famous person. It’s not about being the number one person. But it’s about being your own best person. Allowing yourself to reach for your own individual potential. Allowing yourself to express that part of you that leaves you feeling like you are shining out to the world.

Thirdly and finally in these words “take my hand”: for me this says you don’t have to do any of this on your own, don’t be afraid to step out of your shadows (if that is where you feel you are right now), ask for help, find people who can support you and be role models to you. Choose people who are happy to support you as you work to step out of the shadows and get to where you can “shine”.
